Colorado State University has named Camila Alire as dean of libraries. She will be responsible for overseeing all programs, personnel and services for the university library system.
Alire currently is dean and director of the Auraria Library at the University of Colorado-Denver, a position she has held since 1991. Alire replaces former dean of libraries Joan Chambers, who retired in fall 1996.
After an extensive search, a university panel unanimously selected Alire for the position based on her leadership experience and achievements at other university libraries in Colorado, said David Young, Colorado State’s provost and academic vice president.
"Camilla will bring considerable experience and energy to the dean’s position and will provide strong leadership for continued growth and success," Young said. "She is the right person to lead the university libraries into the 21st century." As dean and director of the Auraria Library, Alire has successfully managed the facility and its resources for three independent institutions, including CU-Denver, Metro State College and Community College of Denver. During her tenure, Alire reorganized the library to provide better service and led the library’s efforts to improve information technology resources available to students and faculty.
Alire earned a doctorate degree in higher education administration and curriculum and instruction from the University of Northern Colorado, a master’s degree in library science from the University of Denver and a bachelor’s degree in history and secondary education from Adams State College.
Prior to her appointment as dean, Alire served as assistant director for Instruction and Research Services at the Auraria Library. She also was director of the Learning Resource Center at Pikes Peak Community College in Colorado Springs and served as coordinator of student services and assistant to the dean at the University of Denver graduate school of librarianship and information management.
Alire’s new position takes effect July 16. Her annual salary will be $115,000.
