Colorado State University Hosts Disability Awareness Days

Colorado State University’s Office of Resources for Disabled Students will host a weeklong program designed to promote positive and realistic images of persons with disabilities March 20-23. The annual program, titled "Got Access?" is free and open to the public as part of Disability Awareness Days. The goal of the program is to heighten awareness about issues concerning individuals with disabilities and to build appreciation for those who are disabled.

The program begins at 10 a.m. Tuesday with "Environmental Messages:

Attitudes, Access and Action,"a slide show and discussion in Room 208 Lory Student Center. The discussion will center on how common artifacts and the campus environment reflect society’s attitude toward those who are disabled.

March 20

  • American Sign Language
  • An introduction to American Sign Language.
  • Noon-1 p.m., Room 210 Lory Student Center.
  • Deaf Culture
  • Learn how people with hearing disabilities interact with each other as well as with those who are not deaf.
  • 1-2 p.m., Room 210 Lory Student Center.

March 21

  • Tutoring Students with Disabilities
  • Presentation and video focusing on strategies for those working with students who have learning disabilities.
  • 10-11 a.m., Virginia Dale Room, Lory Student Center.
  • Canines on Campus
  • Interact with service dogs and their partners.
  • 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Cherokee Park Room, Lory Student Center.
  • At First Sight
  • A film depicting the experience of a man who regains sight.
  • 7-9 p.m., DC Bottoms, Durrell Center.

March 22

  • Attitudinal Access
  • Experiential presentation to help change attitudes towards people with disabilities.
  • Noon-1 p.m., Room 208 Lory Student Center.
  • Mobility Access
  • Presentation exploring the difficulties related to mobility for someone who is visually impaired or obese.
  • 1-2 p.m., Room 210 Lory Student Center.

In addition to the Office of Resources for Disabled Students, sponsors for the event include Colorado State University Parent Fund, the Committee for Disabled Student Accessibility, the Program Activity Council and Residence Life.
