Colorado State Veterinary Teaching Hospital Offers Free Dental Check-Ups for Pets on March 22

The Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital is offering free dental exams for pets on March 22 as part of Pet Dental Health Month.

Veterinary students, supervised by hospital veterinarians, will provide thorough dental exams and give advice to owners about recommended action. Hours are from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on March 22 at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, 300 W. Drake Road in Fort Collins. Appointments are required and can be scheduled with the dental receptionist at the small animal desk by calling (970) 221-4535.

Most dogs and cats have extensive tartar buildup and gingivitis by the age of three. Some pets may already be suffering from periodontal infection, where gums and bone around the teeth are attacked by bacteria. Other animals may suffer from broken or crooked teeth, oral tumors or other conditions that owners may have overlooked.

Plaque buildup and periodontal disease results in more than a pet’s loss of teeth; kidney disease, respiratory diseases and other infections are directly related to poor dental hygiene.

Examinations are open to all animals regardless of age. They need not have been treated at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital beforehand. The free service includes a written evaluation for use by a family veterinarian, but does not include teeth cleaning or treatment for diseases.
