Cinco Cinco 5k Run/Walk and Children’s Fun Run at Colorado State Unversity May 1 Honors Gilbert Gutierrez

The 11th annual Cinco Cinco 5K Run/Walk and Children’s Fun Run will be held May 1 at Colorado State University in honor of Gilbert Gutierrez, former Colorado State ombudsman.

Proceeds from the race will to go the Gilbert Gutierrez Memorial Scholarship for students. The race will begin at 8 a.m. at the Colorado State Oval at Laurel and Howes streets in front of the Music Building and will finish in front of the Administration Building. The Children’s Fun Run, a race around the Oval for children 8 years old and younger, will begin after the 5K Run/Walk. Winners and sponsors of the race will be recognized at the Cinco de Mayo celebration at noon in Old Town.

Gutierrez was killed by a drunk driver as he was running in 1993. Born May 14, 1950, in Cuba, N.M., Gutierrez was a high school track and basketball star who later attended the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, receiving a bachelor’s of science in Spanish and Portuguese. While attending UNM, he was a founding member of the United Mexican American Students organization.

Gutierrez joined Colorado State serving as ombudsman from 1990-1993 and was involved in the Su Teatro theatre company. He was involved with issues such as youth involvement, leadership and mentorship and enjoyed playing the guitar and singing, woodworking, as well as outdoor activities including running, hiking, camping and fishing.

Pre-registration for the race must be completed by April 29 and may be done in person during normal business hours at the university’s Student Recreation Center, Room 116; GLBT Student Services in Room 174 in the Lory Student Center on campus; Foot of the Rockies, 150 E. Harmony Road; or Runner’s Roost, 902 W. Drake St., Suite 7; as well as online at www.active.com. Pre-registration is $17, $15 for students and for participants age 65 years or older and $12 for Colorado State students living on campus. On-site registration on the day of the race begins at 6:30 a.m. on the Oval with an additional registration cost of $3.

Application deadline for students interested in the Gil Gutierrez Memorial Scholarship is May 17.
