Denver Photojournalist Portrays Holocaust Survivors in Slide Show March 2

Denver photographer Nick Del Calzo portrays the lives of Holocaust survivors through photos in his book, "The Triumphant Spirit: Portraits and Stories of Holocaust Survivors and their Messages of Hope and Compassion," which he will present in a slide show at 7 p.m. March 2 in the Lory Student Center Theater. The event is part of the ninth Annual Holocaust Awareness Week at Colorado State University.

Del Calzo artfully weaves black-and-white portraits of more than 90 Holocaust survivors with their inspiring stories found in his book. The collection depicts individuals who are all very different from one another but who are all tied to each other through the persecution and horrors they endured during the Holocaust.

Del Calzo began documenting survivors after visiting Dachau, a death camp near Munich, in 1991. His goal was to capture the hope, spirit and legacies of the survivors in a tribute to the strength of human endurance.

Del Calzo started his career as a journalist and public relations professional but decided to pursue documentary photography in 1992. He has received several national awards for his portrait work.
