Green Certificate at Colorado State’s Department of Construction Management Available

Professionals seeking specialized training in emerging commercial and residential building practices are the focus of the Green Building Certificate Program offered by Colorado State University. The certificate will be offered this spring on campus and is an accelerated evening program providing critical knowledge about sustainable building tools and strategies, including LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, the nationwide rating system of the U.S. Green Building Council.

Colorado State’s Institute for the Built Environment created the certificate program in direct response to the growing need for specially trained professionals who can adapt to the changing industry and culture.

Offered from 5:30-9 p.m. on 12 consecutive Thursdays from March 22-June 7, the Green Building Certificate is specifically designed for those who work in the construction and design industries such as landscape, interior and architectural; contractors and builders; planners and commissioners; facility managers and stakeholders; and built environment engineers and decision-makers.

The 12-week program provides a comprehensive overview of this fast-growing field and addresses residential, commercial/institutional and built environment topics. Coursework focuses on the following topics in green building: sustainable site development; environmentally smart building and finish materials; energy efficiency and renewable energy systems; water use and conservation; daylighting and natural ventilation; integrated building and energy systems; indoor environmental quality; deconstruction, recycling and construction waste; building commissioning; economics of green building and life cycle costing; and LEED Rating System and LEED accreditation exam. Many participants successfully pass the LEED professional accreditation exam soon after completing Colorado State’s Green Building Certificate Program.

Colorado State’s Institute for the Built Environment is an interdisciplinary research and education center for environmentally responsible building design and construction. In addition to a graduate emphasis in sustainable building, IBE works with industry professionals to offer coursework, training and design charrettes in addition to conducting research.
