Great Sofa Round-Up is Coming

One person’s trash is another’s treasure. That’s the premise behind the annual Great Sofa Round-Up at Colorado State University. The Round-Up, which is a free event that allows students and community members the chance to get a new couch and/or get rid of an old one, will take place from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Aug. 1 and 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Aug. 2 at Colorado State’s Visitor Parking Lot at the corner of Lake Street and College Avenue.

Drop-off times for couches are 10 a.m. Aug 1 and 8 a.m. Aug. 2 at the CSU Visitor Parking Lot. No early drop-offs are allowed.

Now in its seventh year, the Great Sofa Round-Up is a collaborative event between Colorado State and the city of Fort Collins that aims to help students and neighbors get rid of unwanted furniture while giving people in need access to free sofas. A majority of the donated sofas go to new homes, and those not fit for reuse are properly disposed at no cost. Day-of sofa pickup is available in limited quantities by calling (970) 224-6046.

In 2007, the Great Sofa Round-Up collected more than 600 sofas, two-thirds of which were given away free to students and community members. About 1,800 people were in attendance last year with 50 volunteers helping to run the event smoothly.

The Great Sofa Round-Up is sponsored by Colorado State University’s Off-Campus Student Services and the city of Fort Collins Neighborhood Services Office.
