Colorado State University Police release new information in death of Matt Quitmeyer

The Colorado State University Police Department today released new information related to the investigation into the death of Matt Quitmeyer.

Although initial indications pointed to a homicide, additional evidence uncovered by CSU Police and Fort Collins Police Services has shifted the focus of the investigation to that of a possible self-inflicted gunshot wound. The investigation is continuing.

Late Saturday, police found the weapon used in the shooting near the body. Quitmeyer legally purchased the weapon in October 2007. In addition, information found inside Quitmeyer’s residence also indicates a possible suicide. Quitmeyer had a medical history of severe chronic pain.

Quitmeyer’s body was discovered on campus at 11:08 p.m. Friday, July 25 in the parking lot of Summit Hall. CSU Police believe that the wound may not have been immediately fatal, and Quitmeyer may have been able to move a short distance prior to his death.

Quitmeyer lived in an apartment building at 914 West Lake St., which is adjacent to Colorado State’s Summit Hall parking lot where his body was discovered. Quitmeyer attended Front Range Community College from 2000-2005. He completed a semester at Colorado State in Spring 2007, but withdrew from the Fall 2007 semester. He was studying language, literature and culture.

Counseling services for colleagues and students are available through the University Counseling Center on campus. Staff is available immediately and into the future to offer grief and trauma support.
