Native American Awareness Month Celebrated at Colorado State University

Colorado State University’s Native American Student Services and American Indian Science and Engineering Society are celebrating Native American Awareness Month with many events throughout the month of November.

The kick-off celebration will run from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, at Colorado State’s Lory Student Center Plaza. The celebration will include a frybread sale, drum group by Midnight Express and Young Bird and traditional dances performed by Native American dancers.

Highlighting the celebration will be the 26th annual CSU Pow Wow beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1. The Pow Wow is open to the public and will feature Pow Wow celebrations, dance competitions and food.

The Fort Collins Museum is joining Colorado State in celebrating Native Americans with a community kick-off event from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, at the Fort Collins Museum, 200 Matthews St. The event will feature performances by Kevin Locke, known throughout the world as a visionary hoop dancer, cultural ambassador, Northern Plains flutist, storyteller, educator and recording artist. Locke will begin the community celebration with CSU Ram Nation Drummers. Also featured at the event will be Native American Skies, a portable star lab planetarium show.

This event is an opportunity to welcome students, faculty and the Fort Collins community to learn about the programs and services, highlights and upcoming events for the year.

A Gathering of Stories: The story of Princess Redfeather

This event is geared toward adults.

Fireside Chat: Native American storytelling and history of tribes that inhabited the Front Range region.

7-9 p.m., Academic Village Fireside Lounge, Colorado State University.

CSU students and Fort Collins community members join for an evening of traditional stories, acknowledgement and history of the tribes of indigenous people who inhabited the Front Range area before early settlers.

Native American Awareness Month culminates with the opening of a new exhibition of work by contemporary Native American artists from around the country. Highlighting the creativity and passion of these living artists, the exhibit will continue the celebration of Native American cultures throughout its year-long stay at CSU. The ceremony includes a performance by Ram Nation Drum Group.
