Legends of Ranching Are Coming to Fort Collins

On April 25th the 2009 Legends of Ranching Performance Horse Sale, hosted by Colorado State University Equine Sciences, will take place at the B.W. Pickett Equine Center, 701 S. Overland Trail, Fort Collins. Sixty-five horses are set go through the sale ring. Not only are there outstanding young horses started by CSU students, the consignors are bringing in some spectacular aged horses as well.

Students in the Equine Sciences training program have worked with high-quality two- and three-year-old mares and geldings, descending from time-honored bloodlines and consigned by some of the most legendary ranches in the west. Four of these ranches – Bogle Ranches, Burnett Ranches Ltd. (6666), S Ranch and Tule Ranch – have been recognized with the AQHA/Bayer Best Remuda Award.

"As a group, this is the nicest set of horses we have had in terms of conformation, athletic ability and pedigree," said Bobbie Skelton, instructor for the training program class in the Department of Animal Sciences. "The caliber of these horses is reflected by the Hall of Fame stallions and AQHA World Champions in their pedigrees."

Along with the outstanding two- and three-year-olds, consignors are sending some of their best ranch horses through the sale ring. These are seasoned all-around horses that are suitable for a variety of activities.

"Ranch horses of this quality would normally not be considered for sale, but our consignors continue to submit some of their highest-quality horses to make the sale truly legendary," said Jim Heird, director of teaching and outreach for the Equine Sciences program.

Prospective buyers are welcome to view sale horses prior to the sale. Those interested in viewing the two- and three-year-olds in action can attend the student competition at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 18 at the B.W. Pickett Equine Center, or they may view the horses at the equine center during normal business hours the week of April 20.
