Pulitzer Prize Winner Sonia Nazario Speaks at Colorado State about America’s Newest Immigrants and U.S. Immigration Policy Oct. 6

Sonia Nazario, distinguished journalist and author of national bestseller “Enrique’s Journey,” will speak at an evening lecture Oct. 6 at Colorado State University. Nazario’s presentation is part of this year’s CSU National Hispanic Heritage Month celebration.

Nazario will deliver a speech and multi-media presentation, “Enrique’s Journey: The Face of America’s Newest Immigrants,” at 4 p.m. on Oct. 6 at the North Ballroom of the Lory Student Center—. She will also discuss America’s immigration controversy and why, based on her experience, the three solutions proposed by President Obama won’t work.

With her Pulitzer Prize-winning photographs, Nazario will speak about the world of millions of immigrant women who have come to the United States as single mothers, and the children they leave behind in their home countries in Central America. She will discuss the modern-day odyssey many child migrants take, some as young as seven, riding on top of freight trains through Mexico in their quest to reunite with their mothers in the United States. Nazario, who spent three months riding on top of these trains to tell the story of one child migrant, will describe how that journey changed her view of migrants.

Nazario has spent 20 years writing and reporting extensively about hunger, drug addiction and immigration. She has been named among the most influential Latinos by Hispanic Business Magazine. Her feature story on “Enrique’s Journey,” from which her book is based, has won her many awards including the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for feature writing, George Polk Award for International Reporting, Grand Prize of Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists Guillermo Martinez-Marquez Award for Overall Excellence. Her book “Enrique’s Journey” has been designated as required reading for freshmen by universities and high schools nationwide and is being made into a two-hour Lifetime network movie.

The evening lecture will be followed with a Q&A session and book signing afterwards. The event is free with a Colorado State University ID. Community members may attend for $3 donation or two cans of food on the day of the event for admission. For more information, contact Helen Kang at (970) 491-7232 or LSC_Ca_Grad@mail.colostate.edu.
