Colorado State Chemistry Club to Entertain Local Children with Halloween Science Fest Oct. 30
Colorado State University chemistry students will present the spooky truth behind the magic of science at the 2009 Mad Scientist Halloween Event on Friday, Oct. 30.
The Chemistry Club will host its fifth annual Halloween event from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Chemistry Building on CSU’s main campus.
The event will engage children in a science show, Halloween crafts, carnival games and trick-or-treating. Participants will have the opportunity to make their own gooey Halloween slime and nitrogen ice cream.
Children of all ages are welcome, but the science-based activities will be geared toward children ages 4-12.
“The Halloween event provided by the CSU Chemistry Club is a great chance for university students and Fort Collins families to come together and share in fun and educational activities,” said Kellie Woll, Chemistry Club student. “The booths and shows we have planned will bring enjoyable learning that will highlight the upcoming holiday.”
The Chemistry Club’s outreach program provides educational shows for teachers throughout the Poudre Valley School District. Student volunteers offer demonstrations and hands-on activities for children in first through 12th grades as well as shows in the university residence halls. The program hosted more than 25 shows in the 2008-2009 school year.
In-class activities include lessons on everything from periodic elements to gravity. All demonstrations are based on educational science guidelines set by the state of Colorado.
"Educating kids goes so much deeper than pouring information into them. You have to make them want to learn and that’s the hardest part. The outreach program is so beneficial to the kids, the CSU students and the teachers because it gets everyone involved in the learning process," said Sarah Ward, member of the CSU Chemistry Club.
The club does not charge for in-school demonstrations and is fully funded through its annual fundraiser of selling fashionable lab goggles to CSU chemistry students.
