Colorado State University Equine Sciences Hosts Successful Legends of Ranching Sale

The fifth annual Legends of Ranching Performance Horse Sale was held on April 24 at the B.W. Pickett Equine Center at Colorado State University.

Twenty-two consignors representing eight states sold 64 horses for an average sale price of $4,734, a 9.8 percent increase from last year. The high-selling horse was HB Good Witch, a 2004 chestnut mare from Mike Wilson of Tatum, N.M., that sold for $20,000.

Consigners included Abraham Equine; Bartlett Ranches; Pete Becker Ranch Inc.; Bogle Ltd. Co.; Bucholz Family; Burnett Ranches; The Four Sixes Ranch (6666); Cowan Select Horses, LLC; Crofoot Ranches; Hanging H Ranch; Haythorn Ranch Co.; KeSa Quarter Horses; Mantz Creek Horses; Purina Mills; S Ranch Ltd.; Saunders Ranch; Singleton Ranches; T-Cross Ranches; Valley Oak Ranch; Wagonhound Land & Livestock; Ware Ranch; Mike Wilson; and Wood Ranch.

University Distinguished Professor and Equine Sciences Interim Director Gordon Niswender reflected on the successful student-run sale. “It was quite a good sale with prices equal to or above sales with similar quality horses. The catalog was responsible for attracting an increased number of buyers this year. It was obvious this was a well-organized and well-operated sale and the students did an excellent job,” he said.

An estimated 1,000 people attended the event. Niswender said the sale seemed to attract more industry professionals from all over the country than in previous years.

Colorado State University Equine Sciences will host next year’s Legends of Ranching Sale on April 16, 2011.
