Colorado State University’s College of Business Hosts Ambassador Tony P. Hall Oct.21

Ambassador Tony P. Hall will speak to Colorado State University College of Business students from 2-3:30 p.m. on Oct. 21 in the Lory Student Center Ballroom. His topic will be “Business with a Social Conscience: Beyond the Bottom Line,” and he will address the roles and responsibilities of business managers as they consider issues such as hunger, beyond traditional profit motives.

Hall was nominated three times for the Nobel Peace Prize and is a leading advocate for relieving hunger and improving human rights in the world. In 2006, he retired from official diplomatic service and is currently serving as director of the Alliance to End Hunger, which engages diverse institutions in building the public and political will to end hunger at home and abroad. The Alliance has more than 75 members — corporations, non-profit groups, universities, individuals, and Christian, Jewish, and Muslim religious bodies. He also serves on Opportunity International’s board of advisors.

In February 2002, President George W. Bush asked him to serve as the United States Ambassador to the United Nations Agencies for Food and Agriculture. He was confirmed by the U.S. Senate and sworn in by Secretary of State Colin Powell in September 2002. He retired in April 2005.

Prior to that, he represented the third district of Ohio in the U.S. Congress for 24 years, authoring legislation that supported food aid, child survival, basic education, primary health care, microfinance, and development assistance in the world’s poorest countries. A founding member of the House Select Committee on Hunger, Ambassador Hall served as its chairman from 1989 to 1993. In response to the abolishment of the committee in April 1993, he fasted for 22 days to draw attention to the needs of hungry people around the world.

In Hall’s efforts to improve human rights and relieve hunger has taken him all over the world, from Asia to Africa to the poorest parts of Europe. He has founded and chaired numerous organizations and task forces and has been recognized for his efforts with numerous awards.

Hall’s presentation is sponsored by Yancey’s Food Service, Otterbox, and the CSU College of Business. The event is open to the public. RSVP to http://biz.colostate.edu/rsvp/tonyhall.aspx.
