2011 Environmental Science Communication Fellows Named at Colorado State University

The School of Global Environmental Sustainability, the Graduate Degree Program in Ecology, and the Center for Multiscale Modeling of Atmospheric Processes have named 30 doctoral and post-doc students as 2011 Environmental Science Communication Fellows.

These Fellows will participate in a hands-on communication training workshop led by Nancy Baron, the Lead Communications Trainer for the Aldo Leopold Leadership Program, along with other nationally prominent journalists.

Journalists include Cornelia Dean, science writer and former science editor of The New York Times; Michelle Nijhuis, contributing editor of High Country News, along with Smithsonian, National Geographic, and The Atlantic; Jon Luoma, contributing editor at Audubon; and Susan Moran, co-host of KGNU radio show “How on Earth,” and contributor to The Economist, Newsweek, and Marie Claire. John Calderazzo and SueEllen Campbell, English professors and co-directors of Changing Climates at CSU, will also lead a day of training during the workshop.

“We are now living in a climate change world, where it is critical that relevant, credible and easy to understand information be readily available to policy-makers, journalists and the public,” said Professor Diana Wall, director of the SoGES. “This workshop will help CSU students become comfortable talking about their research with the pubic, policymakers, and other nonscientists.”

The 2011 workshop for Environmental Science Communications Fellows represents an impressive range of disciplines, including ecology, veterinary medicine, statistics, human dimensions of natural resources, agricultural science, atmospheric sciences and zoology. Fellows were selected through a competitive application process and chosen based on their diversity of research, career plans, and interest in science communication.

The two-day workshop will be May 10-11, and will kick-off with a public lecture, “The Risks and Rewards of Science Communication” on May 9 with Nancy Baron. The open lecture will be from 5-6 p.m. in the Lory Student Center’s Grey Rock Room. For more information, please visit http://soges.colostate.edu/communicationsworkshop.
