The American Publishers Awards for Professional and Scholarly Excellence (PROSE) has recognized “Encyclopedia of Animal Behavior,” with the 2010 Science Multivolume Reference award. Janice Moore, professor of biology at Colorado State University, shared executive editor responsibility for the volumes with Michael Breed, professor of biology at CU-Boulder. The book was acknowledged at the PROSE’s awards luncheon in Washington, D.C.

The 2010 PROSE Awards received a record-breaking 491 entries – the most in its 35-year history – from more than 60 professional and scholarly publishers across the country.

The “Encyclopedia of Animal Behavior” covers not only the usual topics such as communication, learning, sexual selection, navigation and the history of the field, but also emerging topics in cognition, animal welfare, conservation and applications of animal behavior.

The two-volume set, which contains more than 300 articles on aspects of animal behavior, includes the work of more than 400 contributors.

The book includes illustrations and an online video and contains in-depth introductions to the material. A glossary with a compendium of behavioral terms of virtually every concept and phenomenon related to animal behavior also is included.

Together, Moore and Breed have nearly 60 years of experience as university professors and in teaching animal behavior.

At Colorado State, Moore studies the evolutionary ecology of parasite-host interactions, including the effects of parasites on animal behavior as well as the effects of parasites on other parasites in communities. In 2005, Moore was one of 20 environmental scientists from across North America to be named an Aldo Leopold Leadership Fellow.

Established in 1976, the PROSE Awards annually recognize the best professional and scholarly publishing by bringing attention to distinguished books, journals, and electronic content in more than 40 categories.
