Annual Colorado State University Homecoming and Family Weekend Race Slated for Oct. 1

Runners will take their marks at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, to start the annual Colorado State University Homecoming and Family Weekend 5k. The starting point will be on the university’s Oval.

The 31st annual race involves a flat course throughout campus for serious and novice runners and walkers as well as a Kids Fun Run, led by Cam the Ram. The children’s run is part of the Healthy Kids Run Series sponsored by Poudre Valley Hospital’s Healthy Kids Club.

Last year’s race gathered more than 2,200 participants – and another 900 children in the Fun Run –and was one of the fastest races clocked in the city. The race welcomes runners and walkers of all ages and ability levels.

Registration is available online at Early registration ends Sept. 23 and is $20; late registration is available for $25 until 3:45 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29, when online registration closes. Race-day registration in person is available for $30. Registration includes a long-sleeved T-shirt.

Other registration locations include the Department of Health and Exercise Science at CSU, which sponsors the event, at Moby B-wing, Room 220; Foot of the Rookies at 150 E. Harmony Road, Unit 2C; and Runner’s Roost at 2720 Council Tree Ave., Suite 112.

Proceeds from the race will benefit the Heart Disease Prevention program, which is part of the Human Performance/Clinical Research Laboratory. The laboratory provides screening for heart disease risk factors for the public and specific professional groups such as police officers and fire fighters. Screenings include personal and family history, maximal treadmill test, examination by a physician, blood lipid analysis and body composition assessment. Personally tailored results and counseling also are included.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers in each age division. A drawing for participant prizes will take place during the awards ceremony. Food and drinks for all participants will be provided following the race.

Generous sponsors contributed more than $30,000 in 2011. Race sponsors include gold-level sponsors at $5,000 from CSU’s Youth Sport Camps, the Poudre Valley Health System and RE/MAXAlliance and Advanced. Silver-level sponsors at $2,500 are the CSU Bookstore, Dell and Triple Crown Sports. Bronze-level sponsors at $1,000 are Advantage Chiropractic and Wellness Center, All Copy Products, The Egg and I, Orthopaedic and Spine Center of the Rockies, Markley Motors, Miramont Lifestyle Fitness, Gay and Karan Israel, and Ren and Sharon Jenson. The race artwork was donated by Sam Cooper Design.
