Academic integrity is not only an issue of credible scholarship, but also one of character. Colorado State University, twice named a “Campus of Character” by the John Templeton Foundation, plans a series of workshops for students on academic integrity the week of September 26-29.
These workshops will provide students the opportunity to explore the tenets of academic integrity as well as how those tenets apply in their individual fields. Most importantly, students will learn methods to avoid accidental plagiarism.
Students arrive at CSU from all over the world, often with varying degrees of preparation for college-level academic scholarship and, in particular, inadequate training regarding when and how to correctly cite sources in their written work. Compounding the source-citing issue is the fact that different disciplines have different expectations. Students taking classes in several fields of study are easily confused by such differences and experience difficulty in their efforts to comply.
Led by CSU faculty, staff and students, the Academic Integrity Week workshops are scheduled for the TILT Building on the Oval, Morgan Library, Lory Student Center and Rockwell Hall. All events are free and open to the public and aim to provide information that students need to be successful in college and their chosen career.
At “Are You Cheating Your Way Through College? Understanding the Gray Areas” from 4:30-6 p.m. Monday, students can talk with a panel of students and faculty how to decide if something is considered cheating. Prizes will be awarded for the hardest questions. For the full schedule of events for Academic Integrity Week, go to http://col.st/pqpjMj.
Academic Integrity Week is a joint project of Associated Students of Colorado State University, the Office of Conflict Resolution and Student Conduct Services, and The Institute for Learning and Teaching.
