Colorado State University Celebrates Black History Month – Keynote Address by Daryl Davis Feb. 9

Colorado State University’s Black/African American Cultural Center will host Daryl Davis as the opening keynote speaker during this year’s celebration of Black History Month. Davis will speak at 7 p.m. Feb. 9 in the Cherokee Park Ballroom of the Lory Student Center on campus.

Davis will speak about his extraordinary journey into the heart of the institutions of the Ku Klux Klan, and he hopes to empower people to confront their prejudices and overcome fears. Both his work in race relations and his book, “Klan-Destine Relationships,” have received acclaim from various media, including CNBC, National Public Radio and The Washington Times.

As part of celebrations for Black History Month, Malcolm X’s daughter, Ilyasah Shabazz, will speak at a closing keynote address at 7 p.m. Feb. 23 in the North Ballroom of the Lory Student Center. Shabazz will share her story growing up African-American in a racially harsh time in history.

“Black History Month is an opportunity for us to set aside a special time as a united people and reflect collectively on all we as a culture have gone through and take pride in it,” said Bridgette Johnson, director of the Black/African American Cultural Center at CSU. “Through the celebration of Black History Month, we will take time to remember, reunite and rededicate ourselves to our history.”

The Black/African American Cultural Center also has organized several additional events throughout the month in celebration of Black History Month.
