James Owiny, director of the animal care program at Colorado State University and university veterinarian, has been selected as president elect of the Mile High Branch of the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science.

Owiny, who reports to the CSU Vice President for Research, also has been appointed to the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine Recruitment and Education Oversight Committee, another honor in the animal science community.

Both positions are three-year commitments.

The Mile High Branch of the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science promotes quality animal care and use through career development and ongoing education for animal care professionals and through public education, according to the organization’s website.

“My main goals for the Mile High Branch AALAS are to make the branch more visible nationally and to promote high-quality educational programming for the branch membership,” Owiny said. “I intend to use this opportunity to encourage more branch members to become certified as technicians by AALAS.”

Owiny currently serves on the AALAS’s Certification and Registry Board representing District 7, which includes the Mile High Branch.

The American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine Recruitment and Education Oversight Committee works closely with other committees to address “pipeline issues” such as recruitment and training of individuals into the laboratory animal medicine field based on the college’s strategic objectives.

Owiny will serve as the liaison of this committee to the Training Program Oversight Committee and the Mentoring committee. He also serves as a mentor for the organization.
