Daniel Bush, professor and chair of the Department of Biology in the College of Natural Sciences, has been named vice provost for Faculty Affairs at Colorado State. He will begin his new post on July 1.

“Dan Bush is bringing his dedication to shared governance, administrative experience, and enthusiastic leadership to a key administrative position at Colorado State,” said Rick Miranda, provost and executive vice president. “He will excel in addressing the needs of colleges, departments, and faculty in regard to the many important issues facing the university.”

Bush steps in for Tom Gorell, who has served with distinction as interim vice provost and vice provost for Faculty Affairs since February 2004.

The Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs serves as a member of the President’s Cabinet, reports to the Provost/Executive Vice President, and provides leadership and vision in support of the ongoing teaching, research, and outreach mission of CSU. The VPFA provides executive-level direction and management oversight for a diverse group of program areas and has broad responsibilities in both academics and administration. This senior position is responsible for working with faculty, deans, other vice provosts, and vice presidents to ensure a well-supported faculty and exemplary teaching and learning practices.

Bush, who joined CSU in 2003, has played significant roles in several multidisciplinary, intercollegiate initiatives, including spearheading the creation of the Program in Physiological and Molecular Plant Biology and co-authoring its successful applications as a Program of Research and Scholarly Excellence. He also was co-author of the successful Clean Energy Supercluster proposal and is a current member of its executive committee, and he is CO-PI on a NSF-funded IGERT training grant in biofuels. Bush is a past president of the American Society of Plant Biologists and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

He is a member of the Research and Discovery Strategic Plan Review Committee chaired by the Vice President for Research and serves on the steering committee for the Sustainable Bioenergy Development Center.

Bush earned a Ph.D. in Plant Biology from the University of California-Berkeley in 1984. Prior to joining CSU, he was director of the Program in Physiological and Molecular Plant Biology and professor in the Department of Plant Biology and plant biologist for USDA-ARS at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
