Colorado State University Textile Design Exhibition Features Student Designs

The Department of Design and Merchandising at Colorado State University is pleased to present the exhibit, “Frisson: A Kaleidoscope of Innovation,” in the Gustafson Gallery of the Avenir Museum of Design and Merchandising. Student work in the exhibition is created from inspiration including, but not limited to, East Indian embroidery techniques, the music and culture of urban Brazil, Native American woven baskets, Islamic art, Polynesian textile and tattoo designs, art nouveau and Scottish paisleys. The exhibit run through Dec. 5.

The word frisson can be defined as a sudden passing sensation of excitement, a shudder of emotion. The work displayed in this exhibit is from diverse designers and creates a sensational viewing experience of each individual’s work, as well as the collective whole. End use of the textiles shown range from apparel and apparel accessories to interiors and upholstery.

The textiles in the exhibition were created by graduate and undergraduate student designers in the department.

Eight designers from six different countries used many sources of inspiration to develop their textile designs. The work is culturally and aesthetically diverse. The designs in this exhibition were created using a combination of original artwork and scanned images that were digitally manipulated and developed into repeatable textile designs using computer-aided-design software. All of the textiles were digitally printed.

Students Apurba Banererjee, Sage Calamari, Melissa Cozza, Nyndia Diligent, Sarah Fine, Abigail Flowers, Calli Roche and Wijdan Tawfiq created the works featured in the exhibition.

The exhibit will open with a reception from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5. All the designers will be present during the reception to interact with gallery viewers about the work. The Gustafson Gallery is in Room 318 of the Gifford Building on Lake Street. Gustafson Gallery hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday – Friday. Admission is free.
