Colorado State University TEDxCSU Tickets Now on Sale

Tickets for the 2013 Colorado State University TEDxCSU conference, set for 1 p.m. March 2 in the Lory Student Center Theatre, are on sale now. Tickets are free for students and $16 for community members.

Tickets can be purchased online at www.csutix.com or in person at the Campus Box Office on the first floor of the Lory Student Center. The Campus Box Office is open Monday through Friday 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

The TEDxCSU conference gives diverse local speakers the opportunity to present an original idea in a 10-15 minute talk, in the spirit of the TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) mission to promote “ideas worth spreading.” This year’s theme, “Expand Your Perspective,” allows speakers to create change and inspire people within the Fort Collins and campus communities.

“After an overwhelmingly positive response to our speaker hunt and many tremendous applicants, we have assembled an incredible lineup of speakers that promise to challenge your perspectives,” said Hannah Toole, TEDxCSU founder.

This year’s list of speakers includes:

Jennifer Cross, a sociology professor at CSU and co-founder of Caros Consulting LLC., has spoken about community development and sustainability to audiences across the country, from business leaders and government officials to community activists. As a professor and consultant, she has helped dozens of schools and government agencies implement and evaluate successful programs to improve community well-being.

Michael Steger is an associate professor, director of CSU’s Clinical Training and director of the Laboratory for the Study of Meaning and Quality of Life. He has spent more than a decade researching people’s ability to find meaning in their lives and the benefits of living a meaningful life. In his talk, Steger will discuss “What Makes Life Meaningful?” He is the co-editor of “Designing Positive Psychology,” and the forthcoming “Purpose and Meaning in the Workplace.”

Juwon Melvin is the co-founder of LifeSoap Company, a social venture that supports clean water for school children in developing countries. He’s been featured by the Denver Post, NBC News, Self, 5280 Magazine and Oprah Winfrey’s O Magazine. By the age of 24, Melvin had authored two books; the latest is "Help! IDK What I Want to do With My Life."

As a global teacher and researcher, Mairi-Jane Fox has researched carbon capture and storage, corporate social responsibility, ecosystem services, education theory, well-being and work and new economic theories and measurement tools. For her talk, Fox will pose the question, “What do we deeply value, and how do we make it count?” Fox has a master’s degree in Ecological Economics from the University of Edinburgh and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at Austin. Fox is currently a corporate sustainability consultant, a doctoral student in CSU’s Human Dimension of Natural Resources and a board member for the United States Society for Ecological Economics.

Dan Jaspersen is a performer with a background in juggling, magic, linguistics, psychology and experimental theatre. He has been featured at festivals in Japan and Brazil and along Colorado’s Front Range. In addition to performing as a mentalist, Jaspersen leads workshops focusing on creativity and inspiration through memory techniques and nonverbal communication.

Born and raised in South America, Patricia Jolly, an instructor in cultural anthropology at the University of Northern Colorado, has been immersed in Ayore tribal life. Having taught for seven years, Jolly’s accomplishments include consultation on the Ayore/English dictionary, research surrounding Ayore mythology and numerous for her work as an in the classroom. Jolly’s talk will discuss the importance of story and myth in creating cross-cultural empathy and promoting cultural preservation.

Josh Kaufman is the author of the No. 1 international best-selling book, "The Personal MBA: Master the Art of Business," as well as the upcoming book, "The First 20 Hours: Mastering the Toughest Part of Learning Anything." Kaufman specializes in teaching people from all walks of life how to master practical knowledge and skills and is currently one of the top 50 business authors in the world.

Tamara G. Kleinberg is the founder of The Shuuk, an online destination that sells innovative products and is the chief imaginator of Imaginibbles, an organization dedicated to helping people and organizations think creatively. She is the author of two playbooks, including “Think Sideways: a game-changing playbook for disruptive thinking” and “Bootcamp360 For Brides” as well as the creator and host of the webshow, “imagi-NATION: disruptive innovators road tour.”

Kathleen Baumgardner and her husband Jeff are co-founders of a nonprofit start up in Fort Collins called FoCo Cafe. This pay-what-can cafe will serve nutritious and delicious meals to members of the community regardless of their ability to pay. Baumgardner also is the director of Strategic Communications at CSU’s College of Engineering where she received a national award for an initiative to recruit women to study engineering.

Wesley O’Rourke is a CSU senior majoring in Construction Management who is passionate about building things in harmony with the earth.

Brook “Queen Bee” Yates lives in The Gathering Place community house in Morrison, Colo., and is the founder of Dance Utopia, a co-creating community to experience self-love. Yates also teaches adults with visual impairments how to travel safely and independently within the state of Colorado. She will share her insights on “The Power of Receiving.”

The conference consists of three sessions of original talks and discussion, split by two intermissions, during the five-hour-long experience. There also will be an assortment of appetizers and a cash bar.
