Just before this year’s Homecoming football game on Saturday, Oct. 12, the Colorado State University College of Business will dedicate the Sonny Lubick Student Forum on the lower floor of Rockwell Hall West on Laurel Street. The ceremony begins at 10 a.m. and the public is invited.

Lubick, who coached the CSU Rams football team for 15 seasons between 1993 and 2007, is now Community Outreach Director for the College of Business. As a coach, he won or shared six conference titles, took the Rams to nine bowl games, and was named National Coach of the Year by Sports Illustrated in 1994 after leading CSU to a 10-2 record.

“Sonny Lubick will go down as one of the greatest coaches in college football history,” said Urban Meyer, head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes who served as assistant coach under Lubick 1990-1995. “His character, loyalty, work ethic, and genuine love of his players made him one of the most respected leaders on and off the field. His players and coaches became better men learning from Sonny.”

Lubick has continued to inspire students in the College of Business and throughout Fort Collins with his philosophy that emphasizes responsibility, character, respect, and perspective. His impact has been felt not only in the athletics department, but across the University; his tireless work ethic and dedication to doing the right thing and paying attention to how we treat each other every day has become part of the College’s philosophy as well.

In 2003, Lubick was not only named one of four national finalists for the Eddie Robinson Coach of Distinction Award for his community service work, but also recognized by the American Diabetes Association-Colorado Chapter as "Father of the Year."

In 2005, he was named Citizen of the Year by the Fort Collins Board of Realtors, and in 2007, was the winner of the Collins Award, given annually by the chamber of commerce to a local figure who exemplifies leadership and service to the Fort Collins community.

“To me, Sonny Lubick is the most complete human being I’ve ever known,” said Erik Olson, director of development for the CSU College of Business, who coordinated the forum dedication. “He’s a great husband, father, and leader, and we’re honored to create a space where his legacy and leadership traits will be passed on for generations to come.”

The space had been set aside for informal interactions among College of Business students, faculty and staff when the 54,600-square-foot expansion of Rockwell Hall opened in 2010. On Saturday, the dedication ceremony will include the debut of oversized signage featuring a photo of Coach Lubick and some of his inspiring leadership tenets.
