Colorado State University celebrates Cesar Chavez March 24-28

Colorado State University’s annual Cesar Chavez celebration kicks off on March 24 with a theme of "Continuing the Work of Cesar Chavez: Harvesting Hope."

Celebrations begin Monday, March 24, with “Agricultural Labor” from 11 a.m.-noon in Lory Student Center Room 120. Noa Roman Muniz will discuss the complex issues surrounding Latin agricultural labor as well as the societal impacts of the current system.

March 26

Two events will be held on Wednesday, March 26: "Reflecting Back; Moving Forward: Migrant Students in PSD" from noon-1 p.m. at the Poudre School District Boardroom, 2407 LaPorte Avenue, and "Mindful Eating" from 1-2 p.m. in Wagar Building 231. Hosted by Margit Hentschel, "Mindful Eating" will guide participants through a more engaged eating experience.

March 27

Several events will occur throughout the day on Thursday, March 27.

A Cesar Chavez Blood Drive will occur from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. March 27 in the Lory Student Center North Ballroom.

From 11:30 a.m.-noon, check out "Photovoice: Learning the Immigrant Story," showcasing student and parent posters in the Poudre School District JSSC Boardroom, 2407 LaPorte Avenue.

From 12:30-1:30 p.m., Michael Martin and Shannon Archibeque-Engle will guide a discussion about mainstream media’s portrayal of Latin agriculturalists in "Where is Cesar?" in Shepardson Building 118.

Later that day, the annual Cesar Chavez Community Celebration will be held from 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. at the Drake Centre, 802 W. Drake Road in Fort Collins. The night will consist of food, awards and entertainment.

Concluding the celebration

The celebration will conclude March 28 with the "Migrant Worker Viewing and Reception" from 4-5 p.m. on the first floor of the Shepardson Building. Join Eric Aoki in viewing and discussing his panting, "Migrant Worker," which is on display in the College of Agricultural Sciences. "Migrant Worker" is a broad interpretation of the seed planter of crops, ideas, and a representation of individuals who work the earth to provide our bread basket amidst concerns of worker issues, pesticide concerns, and also within new practices of organic farming in the San Joaquin Valley.

All events are free and open to the public. Free parking is available after 4 p.m. in most A, Z and Lory Student Center metered lots.
