Khaled Hosseini, best-selling author of The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, will spend an evening discussing his work June 9, at the Marriott Fort Collins, 350 E. Horsetooth Road. His appearance is part of the Evening with an Author Series presented by Friends of the Colorado State Libraries, Poudre River Friends of the Library, and Old Firehouse Books.

Hosseini’s 2013 novel, And the Mountains Echoed, will be released in trade paperback format on June 3, and will be available for purchase at the talk, which begins at 7 p.m.; doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Tickets are $10 each and available only through Old Firehouse Books, 232 Walnut St., Fort Collins. Anyone who pre-pays for a copy of the book for $16 will receive two tickets to the event, where they can pick up the book and have it signed by the author. Pre-ordered books can also be picked up at Old Firehouse without attending the event.

Seating at the talk is limited to 700, and tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis. A portion of the proceeds from single tickets will be used to purchase copies of the book for local high school libraries and the Poudre River Library System.

And the Mountains Echoed begins in Hosseini’s native Kabul, Afghanistan, but eventually widens outward to Paris, San Francisco and Greece. The tale explores the many ways in which families nurture, wound, betray, honor, and sacrifice for one another, and how often we are surprised by the actions of others.

Hosseini was born in 1965, the son of a diplomat in the Afghan Foreign Ministry and a high school teacher. After the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the Hosseinis sought political asylum in the United States, granted in September 1980. Hosseini earned a medical degree and was a practicing internist between 1996 and 2004. He began writing his first novel, The Kite Runner, in 2001. That debut went on to become an international bestseller and beloved classic, sold in at least 70 countries and spending more than 100 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list.
