Note to Reporters: A photo of Clive Thompson is available with this release at news.colostate.edu.
In his new book, Smarter than You Think: How Technology is Changing Our Minds for the Better, Clive Thompson says technology is changing the way we think.
But is it for the better? Thompson says “yes.” The Internet Age has produced new forms of human cognition. We learn and retain the information longer, and write and think with global audiences in mind, he argues.
Thompson documents how every technological innovation – from the printing press to the telegraph – has provoked the same anxieties that plague us today. How are computers improving our memory? Which tools boost our intelligence, and which ones hinder our progress?
Smarter Than You Think probes the transformation of our minds, offering a provocative vision of our shifting cognitive landscape.
Thompson will be speaking Oct. 15, 7-9 p.m., Hilton Fort Collins, 425 W. Prospect Road, as part of the Evening with an Author Series sponsored by Friends of Morgan Library, Poudre River Friends of the Library, City of Fort Collins Fort Fund, KUNC and Old Firehouse Books.
The event is free and open to the public. Seating is first-come, first-served, doors open at 6:30 p.m. A book signing will follow the talk.
