Make time to spend the evening with author Brigid Schulte April 23

Brigid Schulte, author of Overwhelmed: Work, Love and Play When No One has the Time, will speak in Fort Collins on April 23, as part of the free author evening series sponsored by the Friends of the CSU Libraries and the Poudre River Friends of the Library.

Doors open at the Hilton Fort Collins, 425 W. Prospect Road, at 6:30 p.m.; the talk begins at 7 p.m. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis, no tickets required. A book sale and signing will follow the program.

Journalist Schulte writes about work-life issues and poverty, seeking to understand what it takes to live The Good Life across race, class and gender. How come a minimum wage salary can’t cover the cost of a two-bedroom apartment anywhere? Why is good childcare so expensive and hard to find? Can working parents in America — or anywhere — ever find true leisure time? 

Schulte grew up in Oregon, got her start in newspapers at the Casper, Wyo., Star Tribune, and was part of a team that won a Pulitzer Prize at the Washington Post.

Her latest book, Overwhelmed, is a map of the stresses that have ripped our leisure to shreds, and a look at how to put the pieces back together. She investigates progressive offices trying to invent a new kind of workplace, and travels to Europe to get a sense of how other countries accommodate working parents.

This program is part of a series of free author programs presented by and sponsored by Friends of the CSU Libraries and the Poudre River Library Friends, and supported by the City of Fort Collins Fort Fund, KUNC Radio and the Hilton Fort Collins. Book sales are by Old Firehouse Books.
