CSU’s Homecoming 5K turns 35 this year; early-bird registration ends this week

Colorado State University’s historic Oval will be alive with excitement on Oct. 17 as 2,200 participants take their marks at the 35th annual Homecoming 5K Race, and those who register by the early-bird deadline of 4 p.m. on Oct. 9 can save $10 on their entry fee.

Early-bird registration is $25, preregistration by noon on Oct. 16 is $30, and race-day registration is $35. The entry fee includes a long-sleeve T-shirt. The race will begin at 8 a.m., with a free Kids Fun Run led by CAM the Ram at 9 a.m.

The Homecoming 5K is the largest of its kind in Fort Collins and among the biggest in the state. Participants of all ages get the chance to tour campus as the course winds its way past Morgan Library, athletics facilities, residence halls and classrooms before concluding where it began on the Oval. The Homecoming 5K has become a staple event at CSU, with hundreds of Rams and Ram fans donning their green, gold and Aggie orange to run 3.1 miles through campus at the height of its fall splendor.

Proceeds from the race benefit the Heart Disease Prevention Program of the Human Performance Clinical/Research Lab at CSU. That program, sponsored by the Department of Health and Exercise Science, provides screenings for risk factors for heart disease. This screening includes personal and family history, a maximal treadmill test, an examination by a physician, blood lipid analysis, body composition assessment and much more.

Race registration is open online at http://col.st/APHRv, or sign up in person at Moby B-Wing, Room B220, 951 W. Plum St. on the CSU campus. Other registration locations include Altitude Running at 150 E. Harmony Road, Unit 2C; and Runners Roost at 2720 Council Tree Ave., Suite 112.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers in each age division. A drawing for participant prizes will take place during the awards ceremony.

Sponsors include CSU Youth Sport Camps, Re/Max Alliance, Triple Crown Sports, the CSU Bookstore, UC Health, The Egg and I, Eyecare Associates, the Orthopaedic and Spine Center of the Rockies, Altitude Running, Gay and Karan Israel, Ren and Sharon Jensen, Barry Braun, Bill and Jan Beitz, Markley Motors, Miramont Lifestyle Fitness and Sam Cooper Design.
