William Elliott III will kick off the Brad Sheafor Lecture Series, created in honor of Colorado State University Professor Emeritus Brad Sheafor, with a March 23 lecture on the connection between financial assets and educational success.

Elliott, an associate professor at the University of Kansas and founder of the Center on Assets, Education and Inclusion, will speak at 5:30 p.m. in the Lory Student Center Ballroom C. In “Forging Solutions Out of Challenges,” he will look at the impact of financial assets on children’s educational outcomes.

CSU’s School of Social Work chose Elliott to deliver the inaugural Sheafor lecture due to his unrivaled expertise in the field of children’s savings and college matriculation and success.

“I am confident that the lecture will help to reinforce social work’s leadership role in helping to address many of the social welfare issues, concerns and problems that continue to plague our communities,” said lecture series coordinator Malcolm Scott.

Sheafor is also enthusiastic about Elliott delivering the first talk in the series.

“Dr. Elliott’s work not only informs broad social policy, but also is quite relevant for today’s human service practitioners,” he said. “His presence should be a treat for students, faculty and human services providers in Northern Colorado.”

Sheafor explains that the lecture series was created to help address issues experienced by the most vulnerable members of the community, by regularly bringing to campus a person doing cutting-edge work in social work and other helping professions.

Elliott’s lecture and connection with School of Social Work students is also supported by the Fornaro Family Leadership Program in Social Work and the College of Health and Human Sciences.

Admission is free, and all members of the CSU and Fort Collins community are invited. RSVPs are encouraged online, via email to CSUEvents-CHHS@colostate.edu or by calling (970) 491-4601.

About the series

Brad Sheafor dedicated 38 years of his life to Colorado State University and the advancement of its School of Social Work. The Brad Sheafor Lecture Series honors his national leadership and contributions to social work both locally and nationally.

“The lecture is a fitting testament to the legacy and lifelong commitment to social work education, social work leadership and community social justice issues of our own social work pioneer, Dr. Bradford W. Sheafor,” according to series coordinator Scott.

In recognition of his many years of service, CSU also has invited Sheafor to be part of the Legacies Project, which honors emeriti and retirees of the College of Health and Human Sciences.
