Bruno Sobral just celebrated his one-year anniversary at Colorado State University. He’s spent that year building the One Health Institute, an initiative first launched by the Office of the Vice President for Research in 2013.

The One Health initiative has supported various activities across campus since that time, including seven pilot projects and research. The initiative honors the One Health global philosophy that health for people, animals, and environment is deeply connected and inseparable. The movement emerged after an unprecedented global response to avian influenza in 2005.

“The One Health idea really is all about collaboration in action, sharing, and working together to bring individual strengths together to make discoveries we’d never be able to make alone,” said Sobral, director of the One Health Institute. “CSU — the place, the resources, the ethic, the brilliant people — I can’t think of a better place to be doing One Health work to share with the world in the name of health.”

The One Health approach has been formally endorsed by the European Commission, the U.S. Department of State, U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, World Bank, World Health Organization, various universities and many others.

Working across boundaries, disciplines

Sobral has combined the One Health platform with the notion that there is much to be gained by seeing and working across boundaries with health as the ultimate goal. Now, the initiative has grown into an Institute, supported in design and funding by all eight colleges. It will serve as a catalyst for research collaboration and impactful work across disciplines, professions, and sectors. Colorado State, as a land-grant university and premier research institution with a work-hard ethic, is the right place to bring together talented teams to think big and create outcomes that benefit the health of non-human animals, peoples and the environment.

The One Health Institute’s new physical space is in Johnson Hall, just east of the Oval. Staff offices are in Room 100, while Room 129 is a collaboration space with drop-in work stations intended to be a flexible multi-use space to encourage sharing across boundaries.

“Understanding how human, environmental, and animal health connect as complex but integrated systems is key to creating the innovative solutions we need to address major challenges in everything from food security to climate change and disease,” CSU President Tony Frank said. “The One Health concept gives Colorado State University an increased ability to leverage our resources to support advancements in understanding and breakthroughs in research.”
