Author Kate Moore to discuss ‘Radium Girls’ March 7 in Fort Collins

Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America’s Shining Women is the story of the courageous women who fought for workers’ rights after contracting radiation poisoning from painting luminous watch dials.
The best-selling author of Radium Girls, Kate Moore, will speak about her work Wednesday, March 7, at the Hilton Fort Collins, 425 W. Prospect Road. Her appearance is part of the Evening with an Author Series, presented by Friends of the CSU Libraries and the Poudre River Friends of the Library.
About 4,000 women who worked in watch factories after World War I were instructed to keep their paintbrushes pointed by shaping them with their lips; factory owners assured them the newly discovered element radium was safe to handle. Many became ill, and despite the companies’ effort to keep them quiet, filed suit. The resulting litigation set legal precedents and important labor safety regulations.
This Evening with an Author is free and open to the public. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the program begins at 7 p.m. Seating will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis; no registration or tickets required. A book sale and signing will follow the program.
