It was 240 years ago when George Washington was first referred to as the “Father of Our Country.” According to a new book, that bleak winter was also the turning point for both Washington’s military and political career and the American War for Independence.

Using new and rarely seen contemporaneous documents — and drawing on a cast of iconic characters and remarkable moments that capture the innovation and energy that led to the birth of our nation — New York Times bestselling authors Bob Drury and Tom Clavin provide a breathtaking account of this seminal moment in the battle for American independence. Valley Forge explores Washington’s mission to transform his troops from a ragtag army of citizen soldiers into a professional fighting force, despite the Continental Congress in exile and its treasury depleted, and the American Revolution on the brink of being lost.

Tom Clavin will talk about this new book Oct. 11, 7-8:30 p.m., at the Hilton Fort Collins, 425 W. Prospect Road, as part of the Morgan Library Evening with an Author Series. The presentation is free and open to the public, no tickets required. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis; doors open at 6:30 p.m. Book sales and signing will follow the program.
