Colorado State University and the Denver Broncos are teaming up to provide Colorado’s high school students an inside look at what it takes to build a career in the sports industry.

The Denver Broncos Sport Management Institute at CSU is presenting its first Rookie Camp on June 8 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Canvas Stadium. The agenda includes several breakout sessions, led by Denver Broncos and CSU athletics leadership, covering essential elements of sports management.

Unique opportunity

This first-of-its-kind opportunity will provide participants with an opportunity to meet key leadership players for one of the nation’s iconic sports franchises and have open discussions about the day-to-day operations of a successful professional team.

“We are excited to launch our first sport management Rookie Camp,” said Albert Bimper, a former CSU and NFL football player who now serves as director of the Denver Broncos Sport Management Institute. “This will be a unique experience for high school students interested in learning about multidimensional layers that go into running an NFL franchise and intercollegiate athletic department. Participants are going to have the opportunity to engage with industry professionals that have built their careers around creating an experience for others through sport.”

Program is growing, expanding

The DBSMI was established in 2015 as an academic minor program that includes classes in several CSU colleges. The partnership is unique – no other university teams up with an NFL franchise to provide educational and leadership opportunities.

Plans are already in the works to expand the DBSMI to include a master’s program, which will launch in 2020.

Rookie Camp participants will also have the opportunity to learn more about the campus and will be automatically accepted into the DBSMI program when they apply to CSU.

“We recognize our brand is special; that’s been something that’s been part of Pat Bowlen’s tenure in ownership of this team,” said Mac Freeman, chief commercial officer for the Broncos. “We have high standards. On the field we’re about championships and we’re about being champions in the communities in which we live.

“This (DBSMI) might be the most unique program of its kind in the country. A lot of this is still to be realized. We started with a certificate program (minor) and now the master’s program is moving forward. We’re more excited about where we’re going with this because of what we see as some significant moves that will allow us to get there and be the best.”
