Todos Santos, Mexico – From October 27 to November 3, Colorado State University’s Todos Santos Center will host its third Spanish Immersion course – an opportunity for U.S. citizens to practice speaking Spanish while experiencing the culture and natural landscapes of Mexico’s Baja California Sur Peninsula.

The weeklong course, offered each fall and spring, includes basic Spanish lessons, presentations on Mexican culture and tradition, and excursions through nearby towns, nature parks, and beaches.

While both iterations of the course allow participants to practice Spanish, the spring course includes education on local ecosystems and wildlife, whereas the fall course focuses on culture and also allows participants to experience Día de Muertos, one of Mexico’s most historic holiday celebrations.

“Creating this Spanish Immersion course has been an amazing journey,” said Olaf Morales, the Center’s languages coordinator who also leads the Spanish Immersion course.

Morales led the first Spanish Immersion course at the Todos Santos Center in October 2018, roughly a year after joining the CSU team in Mexico. Nearly 40 individuals, including CSU students, faculty, and staff, as well as government officials and business professionals, have comprised the first three cohorts.

“I hope my students this fall enjoy participating in the course as much as I enjoy teaching it,” Morales said.

Anthony Aragon, director of community engagement at the City of Denver’s North Denver Cornerstone Collaborative, is one of six participants in the Fall 2019 cohort; the other five are faculty and staff from CSU’s Fort Collins campus.

“I was excited to participate in this immersion because it provided me the opportunity to step off the grid and really get immersed in the Spanish language along with Spanish culture,” said Aragon.

Pre-registration is now open for the next Spanish & Nature Immersion, which will be hosted at the Todos Santos Center from March 28 to April 5, 2020.
