Forest Ecology Professor at CSU Awarded Honorary Degree by Swedish University

Dan Binkley, a forest ecology professor in Colorado State University’s Warner College of Natural Resources, was awarded an honorary degree by the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in October in Uppsala, Sweden.

Binkley received the degree for his work in forest ecology, particularly for his specialization in forest biogeochemistry and growth. The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences houses the country’s forestry research and education.

Binkley has collaborated with Swedish colleagues on a variety of projects and issues, including the effects of acid rain on forests, and long-term experiments on forest nutrition and productivity.

The honorary degree was awarded as part of the graduation ceremony for 80 doctoral students in forestry, natural resources, agriculture and veterinary science.

The graduation ceremony followed Swedish traditions. Guest wore formal attire including white ties and tails rather than graduation robes, and recipients of the degree also receive a special doctoral top hat. The graduation ceremony was followed by an elegant dinner at the Uppsala Castle.
