College of Agricultural Sciences Offers Student Scholarships

More than $400,000 in scholarships now are available for incoming freshman and transfer students for fall of 2004 from Colorado State University’s College of  Agricultural Sciences.

Colorado State’s College of Agricultural Sciences scholarship program continues to grow, and over the last decade the number of scholarships awarded through the college has tripled and the dollar value has grown sixfold. The college, which has numerous scholarship donors, offers a diverse range of awards for majors or fields of study including horticulture, animal or equine sciences, farm and ranch management, agricultural production, agribusiness and soil and crop sciences.

"The College of Agricultural Sciences has a generous base of loyal donors who have believe in our college and want students to study agriculture programs at Colorado State," said Julie Karbula, college director of development. "This year alone, donors established eight new scholarships that, combined with our existing funds, will provide scholarship awards to more than 220 students."

Criteria for each scholarship is determined by the donor and includes a wide variety of characteristics including grade-point average, extracurricular activities, major, financial need, leadership and career plans.

Most awards are open for Colorado residents while some are county-specific. For example, the Orville and Catherine Johnson Memorial Scholarship is available to high school or junior college transfer students from Logan or Washington counties. Other county scholarships are the Helen C. McCandless Scholarship (Weld County); Larimer County Farm Bureau Scholarship, Richard O. Woodfin Family Scholarship (Kit Carson and Mesa Counties); and the Weitzel Family Scholarship (Fort Collins high school graduate). The college also awards a generous amount of out-of-state scholarships to students from many states including Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, California, Arizona and Texas.

The scholarship application is available online and must be received by 11 p.m. March 1. All students who apply are considered for all scholarships for which they are eligible.
