Ed Hoover

Dr. Ed Hoover is a University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Pathology and a member of the National Academy of Sciences.

His current work focuses on disease prevention; specifically, the mechanisms whereby prions and retroviruses cross the mucous membranes to initiate infection, the mechanisms and cells involved in transmission and shedding of CWD prions, the potential host range of CWD in cervid and non-cervid species, and experimental vaccines for prion infections.

Hoover developed the FeLV vaccine, now used worldwide to immunize cats against leukemia-causing retrovirus; it is the only vaccine for leukemia in any species.
