Gene expression

The chair of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Stargell investigates the regulation of gene expression in yeast, which has implications for how all living cells function.

Using yeast as a model system, Stargell hopes to understand how the transcription machinery interfaces with chromatin to regulate gene expression in living cells.

As part of her work involving yeast genetics, Stargell and her team have partnered with fifth-graders and their teachers to create a novel outreach program designed to introduce them to genetics and biochemistry. Biochemistry is Elementary provides seven hand-on sessions, and can be easily and inexpensively replicated by other educators.

Stargell earned her Ph.D. from the University of Rochester.
