Robert Gudmestad is a professor in the Department of History. His research focuses on the American South; particularly, the Civil War, steamboats and American slavery, as well as American sports history. Gudmestad is the author of two books – A Troublesome Commerce: The Transformation of the Interstate Slave Trade and Steamboats and the Rise of the Cotton Kingdom.
Gudmestad earned his B.A. from North Dakota State University, his M.A. from the University of Richmond and his Ph.D. from Louisiana State University.
