“The things that control intensity are very small variations in ocean temperatures, the position of the jet stream and moisture in the atmosphere,” said Mark DeMaria, a NOAA research meteorologist with Colorado State University’s Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere in Fort Collins.
