As a tranquilized bull elephant dangled from a crane at the side of a remote road in South Africa last month, Dean Hendrickson inserted a laparoscope and prepared to perform a vasectomy. Layers of fat obscured his view, and the Colorado State University veterinarian pushed through 20 inches of the stuff before finding the reproductive structure called the vas deferens.
