It’s much easier to predict a storm’s track because “the motion is dictated by the broad environmental winds it’s embedded in,” said hurricane researcher William Gray of Colorado State University. Gray said those winds can be measured by planes that fly into the storms and collect data that is fed into computer tracking models.
