William M. Gray, a professor of atmospheric science at Colorado State University’s Tropical Meteorology Project, predicts nine hurricanes in the next year, five of them intense. But such extended forecasts have modest accuracy and Gray couldn’t forecast how many major hurricanes would make landfall.
