El Nino is one of the reasons why meteorologists are calling for a below-average tropical season. Colorado State University, which is calling for nine tropical storms and three hurricanes, and the Weather Channel, which predicts 11 named storms and five hurricanes, mention the likely formation of El Nino conditions later this summer as one reason for the lower number of storms.
