Decades after the 1850s fire, the forest on Pikes Peak was essentially eradicated when settlers cut trees for mining, railroads, firewood and homes, said Dennis Lynch, a professor emeritus of forestry at Colorado State University and district ranger of the Pike National Forest from 1969 to 1972.
