“This forecast is obviously very skilful since 2000,” says Phil Klotzbach, who works on the Colorado State forecasts. But he cautions that it might not work as well for earlier years, when hurricane numbers were less sensitive to sea-surface temperatures, possibly because of shifts in the north Atlantic oscillation in the mid-1990s.
