In one such deal announced late last year, Colorado State University spinoff Solix Biofuels obtained $15.5 million in its first round of outside funding from an investment group including Valero Energy, the largest U.S. oil refinery operator. Solix Biofuels is using the money to develop a pilot plant for its algae-based fuel.
