Whatever their view, those considering government work might want to talk to Tom Stohlgren, 53, a scientist who studies solutions to invasive species for the U.S. Geological Survey. “When I leave the house every day, I tell the kids, ‘I’m going to save the world today!'” says Stohlgren, a 26-year federal employee. As affiliate professor at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, he also mentors students toward science positions in the government.
