In early March, I looked in on a group of Colorado State University Extension agents as they taught Boulder County Parks and Open Space staff how to graft trees. It was a messy job, involving joining the rootstock of young, sturdy trees (rugged Russian heirloom apples in this case) with the growth snipped from the top of old trees (apples from Boulder County).
